I was watching the Bulls game when Tree had a lot of pain and some blood. Then her water broke. Then the nurses all came in and wheeled her bed into the operating room. I held her hand until they kicked me out. They gave her a quick general anisthaetic, pulled the baby out, and cleaned him up a bit. We went up to the NICU and gave him some surfactant to help his lungs. I answered a whole slew of questions about Tree and her pregnancies. Then I went and checked the baby again.
I am now back in Tree's room and got here while there was still almost ten minutes left in the game. Not that I am getting to watch it... But is that quick or what?
She had a baby and is back in the room in less time than it takes to play a basketball game. THIS is where amazing happens.
Bull beat the Cavs, BTW.

Leave it to a man to recount the birth of his child as it revolves around a sports game. Let me give you the run down....
ReplyDeleteThe Bulls game did indeed come on; they had finished with the commentary and were well into the first quarter.
I had been having contractions since about 5 am that morning. They had given me Brethine, and then Terbutaline sulfate to slow them down or stop them best they could. They kept asking me about my pain level and I always said around a 5.
The contractions were intense; I was trying to be a big girl. I would have to bite my lip and thrash a bit every time I got one…but hey millions of women go through this right? Who am I to whine like a little girl? Around 6:20pm I got up to use the bathroom, my soul remaining privilege. I made it to the bathroom door and was as struck with an over whelming strong contraction that took me to my knees. 2 more followed within seconds and I knew I was not leaving the bathroom floor. Terr called in the Nurse, who in turn called in her nurse buddies and in about 30 seconds it was determined that I was in full labor, dilated to a 10 and little baby was already making his way into the world. Feet first.
Then…. The cord …. So by now they are running my bed down the hallways, a nurse is actually keeping baby in, trying to keep pressure off the cord… so they can cut me open and take him out another way??
Terr dressed in his monkey suit and they promptly kicked him out, no time for a local. My blood pressure was dipping and babies vitals were failing.
They were swabbing my tummy, holding baby in, covering me with a sheet and putting a mask over my head all simultaneously.
I awoke in recovery… they were prepping me for blood, I’d lost a lot and my hemoglobin was below 9.
Back in the room, 3 units blood going, oxytocin dripping, 3 doses of morphine later and the Bulls were just finishing up their win over the Cavaliers.
